Mikel Arteta expressed pride in Max Dowman and Marli Salmon after both teens started for Arsenal in their FA Cup win against Mansfield Town on Saturday.
Arsenal faced challenges from Mansfield, who had several chances, but the game turned with a brilliant goal from Eberechi Eze.
The League One team equalized with Will Evans after Noni Madueke scored first, but it was Arsenal who advanced to the quarter-finals.
“It was a true FA Cup match, and Mansfield created a great atmosphere,” Arteta told TNT Sports after the game.
“They made it tough for us. We need to be more clinical in front of goal. If you don’t, the game becomes harder, and it gives hope to the other team. We made a mistake that affected our momentum, but overall, I’m pleased with how we performed.”
Arteta ‘proud’ of Arsenal teenagers Dowman and Salmon
With Max Dowman and Marli Salmon, Arsenal became the first Premier League team to start a competitive match with two players aged 16 or younger.
“Having two 16-year-olds in the starting line-up is unprecedented, and I’m very proud of them,” Arteta remarked.
“Everyone feels part of this journey. We aim to improve and reach our goals with each game.”
