Marco Silva described Fulham’s 1-0 loss to Southampton as a ‘very bad afternoon’ as his team exited the FA Cup.

Fulham failed to advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals after being defeated by the Championship team at Craven Cottage. Ross Stewart scored the only goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time, following a foul by Joachim Andersen on Finn Azaz.

This late defeat ends Fulham’s hopes of winning their first major trophy this season, as a changed lineup could not capitalize on their opportunities. The team had 68% possession and made 24 attempts on goal without finding the net.

When asked if the changes in the lineup led to the exit from the cup, Silva told BBC Sport: “I understand that perspective, but it’s more than that. It was a bad afternoon for us and for our fans.

“We need to analyze further because I’m not pleased with what happened. This is more than just a defeat – if the changes are the reason, then I accept it, but [Ryan] Sessegnon and [Timothy] Castagne have played against top Premier League teams, and Oscar Bobb and Samuel Chukwueze are of the right level. We have to dig deeper. I understand that I bear the blame for making the changes.

“It’s our responsibility to bounce back as we approach the end of the season. We realize it was a very bad afternoon. While anything can happen in football, this goes beyond that. We need to examine the situation as it wasn’t good enough, and that begins with me.”
