Regis Le Bris stated that Sunderland’s young squad doesn’t understand the opportunity they missed after their surprising FA Cup exit at Port Vale.
Sunderland lost 1-0 to the League One team, with Ben Waine scoring the only goal of the match. Port Vale, currently at the bottom of the third tier, shocked Sunderland, who are 55 places higher in the football pyramid.
This marks the continuation of Sunderland’s long wait, as they haven’t reached the FA Cup quarter-finals since the 2013-14 season. Le Bris thinks his inexperienced players may have underestimated the significance of the match.
In an interview with BBC Sport, he praised Port Vale and acknowledged that his team did not perform well enough to secure a win.
“Congrats to our opponents, they played with intensity and patience,” he said. “They showed fighting spirit and took their chance. We had opportunities, but it wasn’t enough to win. We had the players to compete, but we didn’t put in the required effort.”
“We recognized this as a chance to advance far in the tournament. The players are young, and sometimes they don’t fully grasp the opportunity presented to them. The pitch conditions are the same for everyone; we won’t make excuses. They brought the fight, and their crowd supported them well. They deserved to win based on their performance.”
