Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has supported the club’s choice to sell Luis Diaz, noting that the transfer was not seen as ‘crazy’ last summer.
Liverpool sold Diaz to Bayern Munich last summer for around £65 million. His absence has been noticeable for the team.
Under coach Arne Slot, Bayern Munich has excelled, with Diaz making an impressive debut season, scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists across all competitions. They currently lead the Bundesliga by 11 points.
Diaz played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title win last season. However, with his contract nearing its end and him turning 30, Liverpool opted to sell him to support their record spending last summer.
Nicol argued that those critiquing the sale have the advantage of hindsight, as few questioned the decision when it was made. He mentioned ongoing investments in players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, and noted the rationale behind accepting nearly £70 million for a 29-year-old player while having options like Gakpo available.
“It’s easy to judge after the fact. At that moment, selling a 29-year-old for £70 million while bringing in new talent felt like a smart move. Hardly anyone raised concerns back then. Experts didn’t say, ‘Liverpool is making a mistake,’” he stated.
