Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro faced off in the Campeonato Mineiro final in Brazil on Sunday, leading to chaotic scenes.
Cruzeiro won the match with a close 1-0 score, but the main story was a major fight that broke out between the players.
In a surprising turn of events, 23 players received red cards as both teams got involved in the brawl. The incident began with a tackle on Cruzeiro’s goalkeeper Cassio by Atletico Mineiro’s Christian, prompting players from both sides to intervene.
It took several minutes to restore order, even with the presence of security and police, before Cruzeiro was awarded the trophy. The referee reported a total of 23 red cards, issued as 11 for Cruzeiro and 12 for Atletico Mineiro.
Among Atletico players sent off were former Premier League stars Lyanco and Renan Lodi, as well as ex-Porto player Hulk. Cruzeiro’s match-winner Kaio Jorge was also dismissed.
Notably, these 23 red cards set a new record in Brazilian football.
