Xavi has stated that Lionel Messi’s return to Barcelona was almost certain before being stopped by president Joan Laporta.
Barcelona aimed to bring back their all-time top scorer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2022, but the transfer did not happen.
Xavi, who was the head coach at the time, accused Laporta of blocking Messi’s return to Camp Nou, sharing how the deal fell through.
“Leo Messi coming back to Barcelona was a done deal after Argentina’s World Cup win. It was agreed,” Xavi told La Vanguardia.
“We had clearance from La Liga and Messi wanted to return, but Laporta halted the signing.”
“Laporta told me that if Leo came back, there would be salary issues, and he couldn’t handle that.”
In a broad interview, Xavi mentioned other blocked signings, including Martin Zubimendi, and a potential return to the club.
Laporta responded to Xavi’s remarks, expressing surprise and disappointment. He noted that Xavi had a tough season without trophies.
“Xavi’s interview surprised and hurt me. I understand he feels let down. With the same players, Flick won and Xavi didn’t,” Laporta commented.
“With Xavi, I sensed loss; with Flick, I see victory.”
