Harvey Barnes is confident Newcastle can defeat Barcelona in Spain and reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Barnes seemed to give Newcastle a 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg after scoring from Jacob Murphy’s cross in the 86th minute.

The Magpies deserved this lead, having produced several chances, including another shot from Barnes that hit the post.

However, a foul by Malick Thiaw on Dani Olmo in stoppage time resulted in a penalty, which Lamine Yamal successfully converted.

Despite this disappointment, Barnes feels Eddie Howe’s team can achieve the necessary outcome in the return leg.

“Of course, we’re disappointed with how the game ended, but we need to focus on the positives,” he stated.

“I believe we played very well and controlled much of the game. They’re a formidable team with talented players, but we managed to keep them quiet for long stretches.

“We created our chances, initially took the lead, and for nearly the entire match, we were ahead in the tie. Now it’s level, and everything is at stake next week, making it an exciting matchup.

“The equalizer was tough to take because I felt our performance warranted a better result.

“We should have been going there next week with a one-goal lead. Unfortunately, that’s football. We have to quickly move on, reset, and approach the match with the intention of winning and advancing in the competition.
