David Moyes has defended Arsenal’s approach to the game as he prepares Everton to face the Premier League leaders this weekend.
The Toffees will visit north London this Saturday for a 5.30pm kickoff at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has faced criticism for his team’s style, which focuses on scoring from set pieces and maintaining defensive possession, and for not winning a major trophy in the past five years. However, Moyes, who previously managed Arteta at Everton, believes his colleague has done an excellent job.
Moyes Supports Arsenal Ahead of Everton Match
“What criticism are you talking about? Arsenal has been doing really well. Mikel has done a fantastic job. Being runners-up to Manchester City is no disgrace, given their quality over the last decade,” Moyes said.
“He’s done an outstanding job at Arsenal. They have a strong team and a great chance to win the league this year. They are also competing well in the Champions League, with a League Cup final and the FA Cup ahead. I would definitely question those who have been critical.”
Moyes argued that Arsenal’s strength and effectiveness with set pieces should not be seen as a negative for English football, suggesting that it adds variety to the game.
“Why is it a problem that they excel in set pieces and have a strong, physical style? It’s part of the game,” he remarked.
“If everyone aimed to play the ‘beautiful game,’ football would become dull. Part of the appeal of the sport is the diversity in styles available for discussion.”
“It would be boring to watch every team play the same way. I appreciate teams having different strategies and approaches.”
“We have incredible managers, and Mikel is among them. He has shown what he can do. While not every approach may work all the time, Mikel has successfully evolved his team and has a very good squad right now.”
