Jamie Carragher has described Liverpool‘s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur as a major setback for the club’s Champions League ambitions.
Liverpool missed a chance to gain ground in the Champions League race after the match at Anfield. They took the lead with Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick but couldn’t score again, allowing Richarlison to equalize late in the game for Spurs.
Tottenham entered the match on a six-game losing streak and had not won in the Premier League in 2026.
Despite being favored to win, Liverpool failed to make the most of the situation after rivals Aston Villa and Chelsea lost. Carragher criticized the result for his former team as a significant setback.
“It was coming, I’ve been saying all second half. They have been sleepwalking. It was always going to be Richarlison; he has been Tottenham’s most dangerous player,” he mentioned on Sky Sports.
“Liverpool didn’t challenge for a long ball, and I’m not sure what Van Dijk was doing. Liverpool were all over the place. Tottenham deserved the goal; it was clear,” he added.
“This is a major setback for Champions League qualification. With Aston Villa and Man Utd playing against each other, someone was bound to drop points. If there’s a team you want to play, it’s Tottenham, but Liverpool made Spurs look competitive.”
