Roy Keane has raised concerns about whether Michael Carrick is the right choice for Manchester United, despite his strong performance as interim manager.
Carrick has led Manchester United to the Champions League spots, achieving seven wins in nine matches since taking over from Ruben Amorim.
A recent 3-1 victory against Aston Villa solidified the club’s position in the top four, prompting more calls for Carrick to be appointed permanently.
Wayne Rooney, a former teammate, has endorsed Carrick for the full-time role. However, Keane believes the club needs a manager with more experience in winning trophies.
“Players often favor a caretaker manager because there are fewer distractions. Once you become the manager, the job becomes more complex,” Keane stated to Sky Sports.
“Manchester United needs someone who has experience in winning titles and competing in Europe, which Carrick lacks.
“While everyone seems to support him now, I wonder how they felt last week when the team struggled to beat a Newcastle side with 10 players.
“It’s important to remember this is the same squad that finished 15th. People may be excited that United is third, but I’m not. I get more excited when teams are winning trophies.”
When asked who the club should consider for the managerial role, Keane mentioned Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique as potential targets.
“There are many options, including Simeone and Enrique. You should be looking for the best, like Tuchel, as Jamie Redknapp just pointed out.”
