Gary Neville has pointed out that Manchester United needs to solve its midfield issue during the summer transfer window.
Under interim manager Michael Carrick, United has done well, winning seven out of nine matches, which has lifted them to third place in the Premier League.
After Sunday’s victory over Aston Villa, United is now in a strong position for Champions League qualification, but Neville warns that this could be challenging without further investment.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Neville emphasized the need for the club to acquire “two really good central midfield players” during the summer, especially with Casemiro likely leaving and uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte. He also called for defensive improvements but stressed that the midfield should be the priority.
“The centre of midfield is a problem. Mainoo and Casemiro are performing well currently for Michael Carrick. However, everyone knows they will need more options when participating in the Champions League next season,” he said.
“It’s likely they will qualify, and with deeper runs in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup alongside Champions League games, they will need three or four strong midfield players. Right now, Mainoo shows promise, but the others may not be sufficient.”
“With Casemiro leaving and possible departures for Manuel Ugarte, they must bring in two high-quality central midfielders. One should be more of a positional player, akin to Michael Carrick, and the other should be a more aggressive type.”
“While the defense also needs attention, the midfield should be the main focus this summer.”
