Giovanni Reyna has been chosen as one of eight midfielders for the U.S. Men’s National Team’s upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Portugal, despite limited playing time this year.
At 23, Reyna has played only 28 minutes for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga this season, missing action since January 17 due to a thigh injury. He had four starts and a total of 403 minutes in 13 matches during the 2025-26 season.
The roster was announced on Tuesday and does not include Tyler Adams, the captain from the 2022 World Cup, who missed Saturday’s Premier League match for Bournemouth due to discomfort in training.
This may have opened the door for Reyna, although other potential candidates, Alex Zendejas and Diego Luna, were not selected after recent injuries.
Reyna, the son of former U.S. national team players Claudio and Danielle Reyna, had limited opportunities in four games during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino brought Reyna back after an eight-month absence for a match in November, where he scored a goal and provided an assist in a 2-1 victory over Paraguay. He also assisted in a 5-1 win against Uruguay.
Pochettino praised Reyna, stating he demonstrated why he was a starter after the game against Paraguay.
The USMNT, currently ranked 15th in the FIFA world rankings, will compete against No. 9 Belgium on March 28 and No. 6 Portugal on March 31. Both matches will take place at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
