Pep Guardiola has downplayed the idea that Real Madrid is the biggest challenge of his career, even after Manchester City’s recent exit from the Champions League to the Spanish club.

The defeat was significant, with City struggling to maintain control in both legs against a team that performed well in critical moments.

However, Guardiola did not label Madrid as the toughest opponent he has faced.

Pep Guardiola says Jurgen Klopp was his ‘biggest challenge’

Guardiola made these remarks after Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City with a 5-1 aggregate win in the last-16 tie.

“No, Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool was my biggest challenge. You have no idea how it is to face them,” Guardiola stated.

He added, “Those matches were a great learning experience for the team, since we faced a team that had been successful in the competition while we were just starting out.”

Madrid took charge early on, winning the first leg 3-0 and sealing the tie with a 2-1 win at home, highlighting the difference between the two teams.

This defeat continues a trend, as Real Madrid has often found ways to eliminate Guardiola’s side in recent Champions League tournaments.

Guardiola explains why Real Madrid is not the biggest challenge

Despite the defeat, Guardiola views the rivalry with Madrid as competitive rather than all-defining.

“Real Madrid have beaten us, we’ve won some, and we’ve had great moments as well, but I believe the teams we’ve played recognize our challenge too,” Guardiola explained.

His comments suggest that the rivalry is shaped by key moments and not by one team’s dominance over the other.

Instead, he continues to regard Klopp’s Liverpool as the key challenge, where regular league matches and tactical changes presented a more consistent test.

Even after a tough exit from Europe, Guardiola’s perspective has not shifted: while Madrid may win the clashes, they do not define his standards.
