Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ollie Watkins have been excluded from the England squad by Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming international break.
The Three Lions will play against Uruguay on Friday, March 27, and Japan on Tuesday, March 31, at Wembley Stadium as they prepare for this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America.
Tuchel has selected a 35-man squad for the two friendly matches, but Alexander-Arnold and Watkins, who together have 54 international caps, are not included. Both players have experience in major tournaments.
This absence raises concerns about their chances of making it to the World Cup. Alexander-Arnold has struggled since transferring to Real Madrid from Liverpool last year, and Watkins has had a quieter scoring season compared to his previous performances.
Tuchel may be looking into alternatives during this international window. He stated that he has left them out to evaluate other players, as he is already familiar with what both can contribute.
Reasons for the omission of Alexander-Arnold and Watkins from the England squad
“It’s a tough decision, and Trent is a huge talent with a remarkable career. I understand what he can bring, but I chose to go with others,” Tuchel shared at the announcement of the squad.
“We performed well in September, October, and November, and I know what Trent is capable of. I’ve faced challenges from him in games against my teams.”
“The right full-backs in training must prove themselves for a chance to be in the World Cup squad.”
Tuchel has divided the England camp into two groups, welcoming 19 outfield players and four goalkeepers for the first part of the window to compete for World Cup spots.
On Saturday morning, 11 established team members will join the camp, and some players will be released, aiming for a final group of 21 or 22 players, along with a goalkeeper.
“I am excited to return,” Tuchel said. “This March camp is unique. We have already qualified, and our players are at important points in their club seasons. This is the last chance to impress and fight for a spot. That’s why we have divided the squad.”
