Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid face off in La Liga today in an important derby match.

Real needs a victory to maintain pressure on Barcelona at the top of the table, while Atletico aims to spoil their rivals’ title hopes.

Bernd Schuster

The German star had a remarkable career in Spanish football. After joining Barcelona in the early 1980s, Schuster helped the team win six trophies over eight seasons before moving to Real Madrid in 1988. There, he won back-to-back La Liga titles in two seasons.

Later, he transferred to Atletico, where he played 112 matches and won the Copa del Rey twice.

Santiago Solari

Real Madrid signed Santiago Solari from Atlético Madrid after the latter’s relegation in 2000. The Argentine midfielder impressed, leading Real to activate his buy-out clause.

Solari spent five seasons at Real, making 217 appearances and winning two La Liga titles as well as the 2001-02 Champions League.

Juanfran

Juanfran started his career at Real Madrid but became better known for his time at Atletico.

The right-back had just 11 appearances for Los Blancos before joining Espanyol and Osasuna. In 2011, he returned to Madrid with Atletico for a fee of €4m and made 355 appearances, winning the 2014 La Liga title and two Europa Leagues.

He also reached two Champions League finals against his former club, Real Madrid, and missed a crucial penalty in the 2016 final.

Alvaro Morata

Alvaro Morata has played for both clubs twice. Starting at Real Madrid, he scored 11 goals in 52 games before moving to Juventus.

After a successful spell in Italy, Real Madrid re-signed him, and he contributed to their La Liga and Champions League wins in the 2016-17 season.

Later, he joined Chelsea, had loan spells at Atletico and Juventus, and eventually returned to Atletico, scoring 53 goals in 154 appearances overall.

Thibaut Courtois

Courtois enjoyed a successful career at both Madrid clubs. He spent three seasons on loan at Atletico from Chelsea from 2011 to 2014, becoming a top goalkeeper.
