Sunderland Secures Tyne-Wear Derby Victory with Brobbey’s Late Goal

Sunderland secured a late victory at Newcastle United, maintaining their strong record in the Tyne-Wear Derby.

Brian Brobbey scored in the 90th minute, giving Sunderland the edge at St James’ Park after he managed to finish the rebound from his initial attempt.

Sunderland came from behind to clinch the victory in a match that saw Newcastle dominate the first half. Anthony Gordon’s goal had put the Magpies ahead, marking his third straight game on the scoresheet in the Premier League.

However, the dynamic shifted after the break. Following their midweek Champions League game against Barcelona, Newcastle appeared to fatigue while Sunderland started to gain momentum.

Sunderland equalized just before the hour mark when Chemsdine Talbi capitalized on a loose ball. Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale failed to clear a corner effectively, allowing Sunderland to take advantage.

Newcastle thought they had restored their lead when substitute Malick Thiaw scored from a corner, but the goal was disallowed by referee Anthony Taylor due to Jacob Murphy interfering with Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg from an offside position.

As the match approached its final moments, Sunderland seemed more likely to score and ultimately did. Enzo Le Fee’s cut-back from the side found Brobbey, who, after having an initial effort saved, netted the winning goal.

This victory extended Sunderland’s unbeaten streak in this fixture to 11 matches in the Premier League, while Newcastle has not won a league Tyne-Wear Derby in 16 years.
