Goalkeeper James Pantemis made six saves as the understrength Portland Timbers secured a 1-1 draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday afternoon.
Portland played the last 70 minutes with 10 players after defender Kamal Miller received a red card.
Kristoffer Velde scored for Portland (1-3-1, 4 points), ending a three-match losing streak.
Joao Klauss scored for the Galaxy (1-2-2, 5 points), who managed to halt a two-game losing streak. Los Angeles goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski made two saves.
Despite having an extra player, the Galaxy extended their road winless streak to 20 regular-season matches (0-12-8) since October 2, 2024.
The score was tied 1-1 at halftime after an action-packed first half.
Portland took the lead in the 13th minute with a clever passing play. Joao Ortiz passed to Antony, who then fed Velde in the left side of the penalty area. Velde’s low shot from 10 yards hit the far side of the net as Marcinkowski, in his first MLS start this season, tried to block it.
The game changed in the 19th minute when Miller fouled Klauss while trying to stop a counterattack. Referee Drew Fischer initially gave a yellow card, but after a review by the video assistant referee, it was upgraded to a red for Miller’s reckless tackle on Klauss’ right Achilles.
The Galaxy equalized in the 30th minute after a Portland mistake deep in their own territory. Gabriel Pec seized the loose ball and passed it to Marco Reus at the top right of the box. Reus back-heeled it to Klauss, who fired a left-footed shot from 8 yards into the net, marking Klauss’ fifth goal in as many MLS matches this season.
