Steven Gerrard has expressed support for Kobbie Mainoo, suggesting he should join the England squad for the World Cup, especially now that he is getting regular playtime with Manchester United.

Mainoo has been named in the England squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, marking his return after last playing for the national team in September 2024.

The 20-year-old faced a tough period under former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, which limited his opportunities. However, he has shown strong performances since interim manager Michael Carrick took over following Amorim’s departure in January.

Gerrard discussed Mainoo’s situation, expressing concern about how he was treated under Amorim. He described that period as unfair and voiced his belief that Mainoo deserves a significant role with England this summer.

“I felt really sorry for him during his time under Amorim,” the former England captain told TNT Sports. “Not giving him a chance was out of order, especially given United’s struggles.”

“I’m not surprised that Carrick has brought him back into the team. It was one of his first good decisions.”

“Bring Kobbie Mainoo back in, get him confident, give him playing time and help him get match-fit, which he is capable of doing.”

“Now, he is at a level to be part of the England squad, regardless of his previous lack of playing time under Amorim.”
