West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has identified Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as one of his biggest role models.
The 21-year-old has been selected for the Portugal squad for upcoming friendlies against Mexico and the United States. This selection follows an impressive debut season at West Ham, where Fernandes has been a key player in a struggling team.
Only Wolves’ Joao Gomes has made more tackles than Fernandes (54) in the Premier League this season.
He has joined his fellow countryman and namesake Bruno Fernandes in the national team and regards the Manchester United captain as a significant influence.
Both players developed at Sporting Lisbon before moving to the Premier League.
“One of my biggest role models is Bruno Fernandes,” he told Sebastião Sousa-Pinto.
“It’s because of the player he is. Even when I was at Sporting, he was someone I looked up to and tried to learn from.
“He plays in the same league and has a lot of experience with the national team and in the Premier League. Without a doubt, Bruno stands out among the midfielders here [in the national team].”
