Sebastian Kehl has officially left Borussia Dortmund and may soon return to football.
The 46-year-old stepped down after being succeeded by Nils-Ole Book. He is already looking into prominent roles across Europe.
According to the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur is considering Kehl as a leading candidate for their sporting department. Spurs are in search of stability after letting go of former director Fabio Paratici in February.
The North London team is currently in a tough position, sitting in 17th place in the Premier League, just above the relegation area. Manager Igor Tudor is under heavy scrutiny following the earlier firing of Thomas Frank.
Potential managerial options like Roberto De Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino are being explored for the summer.
Tottenham consider former Dortmund Chief Sebastian Kehl for new role
Kehl is known for his talent spotting, making him a strong candidate for Tottenham’s rebuilding efforts. During his time at Dortmund, he was behind several impactful signings that brought both quality and resale potential.
Notable acquisitions included Nico Schlotterbeck from Freiburg for €20 million, who established himself as a top centre-back, as well as Serhou Guirassy, signed for €18 million, who scored 21 goals in his first season.
His knack for finding value is evident with the €5 million signing of Julian Ryerson from Union Berlin and the acquisition of Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland for €30.5 million, which aims to strengthen the club’s future.
Additionally, his €30 million investment in Karim Adeyemi brought in one of Germany’s promising offensive players. These successful deals showcase a level of financial and tactical insight that Tottenham currently lacks.
Reports indicate that Tottenham is contemplating a modern setup with multiple sporting directors to distribute responsibilities. This could mean Kehl working alongside other experienced figures like Dougie Freedman or Paul Winstanley.
Due to ongoing structural discussions, a final agreement is not expected soon.
However, Kehl’s experience with elite youth systems aligns well with Tottenham’s long-term goals. Many will be waiting to see if he opts for London as his next career destination.
