Ange Postecoglou has opened up about the difficult afternoon when he was let go by Nottingham Forest.
In a recent interview with SEN, the manager shared details about the aftermath of Forest’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea in October.
While many coaches are dismissed quietly days after a match, Postecoglou’s situation was different; he was informed of his firing just minutes after the final whistle.
“I haven’t shared this before, but it was tough. I was sacked right after the game,” Postecoglou told Gerard Whateley.
He added: “I was in the coaches’ room, expecting it, but they let me go immediately after the match. I didn’t even do the press conference, but the media was aware.”
Postecoglou recalls the day of his dismissal
The Australian described an unusual experience as he moved through the stadium, facing media members who knew what had happened.
He encountered them before meeting with his own staff. Additionally, his exit was complicated by traffic, which kept him in his car for half an hour.
“I was stuck at the traffic lights for 15 minutes,” he recalled. “I had Chelsea fans shouting at me, Forest fans weren’t any friendlier, and then I even had little kids asking for selfies.”
The public attention during this time was uncomfortable. Postecoglou referred to his time at the traffic light as “paying for my penance.”
Despite the tough situation, the 60-year-old maintains a calm outlook. He accepts full responsibility and does not allow the Forest leadership to “hurt” him.
With nearly 30 years in football management, he considers this experience a minor setback in his career.
Postecoglou is now focused on his next managerial role but will carefully choose future ownership groups.
