Recently, there has been increasing speculation about Manchester United‘s interest in Sandro Tonali as they look to rebuild their midfield for the upcoming season.

With veteran midfielder Casemiro departing Old Trafford following a strong final season, United needs to find a suitable replacement for the 2026/27 campaign.

Among the candidates, Tonali from Newcastle United stands out, with many considering him the top choice to partner with Kobbie Mainoo.

However, new developments have emerged. Today, it was reported that there was supposed to be a gentleman’s agreement for Tonali to leave St. James’ Park if Newcastle does not qualify for European competition.

But Luke Edwards of the Telegraph has clarified that this agreement does not exist.

According to Edwards, Newcastle has addressed the media, stating that while a move is not ruled out, Tonali has not indicated a desire to leave the club.

Furthermore, Newcastle has not yet received inquiries from clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Arsenal, who are all reportedly interested.

This is a significant development in the ongoing situation, which is expected to evolve as the summer transfer window approaches.

Meanwhile, with Italy advancing to the 2026 World Cup qualifier playoffs, Tonali is currently focused on international responsibilities. He was instrumental in Italy’s recent match, scoring against Northern Ireland and assisting Moise Kean as Italy secured a 2-0 victory.
