England manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed support for Ben White, affirming that the Arsenal defender “deserves another chance” with the national team.

White’s call-up for the warm-up matches against Uruguay and Japan marks his return to the squad after three years.

The 28-year-old had previously left the 2022 World Cup camp in Qatar early for personal reasons and was unavailable for Gareth Southgate’s team since then.

However, Tuchel has stated that any past issues are in the past ahead of Friday’s match at Wembley.

The manager acknowledged he is focused on White’s eagerness to contribute rather than past disagreements.

“I don’t know the details of what happened,” Tuchel said at a press conference on Thursday. “I wanted to turn the page and start anew.”

When asked if he was ready to return, White was quick to respond positively, showing enthusiasm about coming back.

Tuchel added that White “immediately, without hesitation, said he would love to come back and was eager to join.”

This recall enhances England’s defense options ahead of the World Cup. White’s ability to play both right-back and centre-back gives Tuchel much-needed tactical choices as he aims to secure his spot in the final squad for North America.

Many current squad members experienced the fallout from the 2022 World Cup.

Thus, Tuchel highlighted the importance of resolving any issues before the tournament starts.

“I think it’s crucial he clears the air with his teammates,” the manager noted. “We’ll see how he feels and if he’s as comfortable and confident as he would like to be.”

White’s return comes at a time when Arsenal is facing a defensive injury crisis, with major players William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães pulling out of international duty.

As a result, this international window provides White a key chance to prove his abilities.

He needs to reintegrate into the England squad while also considering his future at Arsenal.

White hopes this international break will motivate him to finish the season on a high note.

The manager is in the process of planning for the 2026 World Cup in North America. England will face Uruguay at Wembley tonight, followed by a match against Japan four days later.

These games are the last home exhibition matches before the tournament starts on June 11, presenting White with a significant opportunity to secure his place in the summer squad.
