Harry Maguire was shocked by the referee’s decision to give Uruguay a late penalty against England on Friday night.

The Three Lions controlled most of the friendly at Wembley Stadium and seemed set for victory when Ben White scored in the last ten minutes, marking his first international appearance in four years.

However, White gave away a penalty that went to VAR for review, which was converted by Fede Valverde in stoppage time.

Maguire calls penalty decision ‘ridiculous’

Maguire believed the penalty awarded to Uruguay was “soft,” especially considering that a strong challenge by Ronald Araujo on Phil Foden earlier went unpunished.

“I felt like we controlled the whole game; they didn’t really create a chance,” he told ITV. “We could’ve been better; when we made the substitutions, we lost a bit of our rhythm and game plan, but that happens when you change things in the 60th or 70th minutes.

“But we had control of the game; they didn’t really get into our box, and then they were given a ridiculous penalty.

“It’s soft. He kicked the ball over the bar, and then Ben just tried to block the shot.”

There were more controversial moments in the game, as Manuel Ugarte avoided a red card despite receiving two bookings. The second yellow was revoked, and Maguire mentioned later that England learned the first yellow was mistakenly shown to Jose Gimenez.

“We’ve been informed that Ugarte was shown two yellow cards, and the second one was rescinded. Now we’ve heard that the first yellow card was actually for Gimenez. So, instead of two yellow cards, Ugarte received none.”
