After facing challenges at Manchester United, Harry Maguire is making a comeback at a crucial time.

The England international joined Manchester United in 2019 for a record £80 million, quickly becoming a key player.

He has experienced both successes and setbacks during his time with the team.

Maguire won the League Cup in the 2022/23 season and the FA Cup the following year, but has also faced difficulties, even as he excelled internationally.

A consistent choice for Gareth Southgate since his debut in 2017, he has frequently been included in the England squad.

However, by 2024, his club appearances decreased due to the strong performances of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

With a new opportunity under Thomas Tuchel, he is working towards a spot in the 2026 World Cup and was called up for the March international break along with teammate Kobbie Mainoo.

Playing alongside Fikayo Tomori, he featured in the 1-1 draw against Uruguay, completing the full match and receiving positive reviews.

Despite this, Tuchel indicated there are four defenders currently ahead of the 33-year-old. According to the Manchester Evening News, he stated:

“I got exactly what I thought. To be honest, yeah. Solid, solid central defender play. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and a weapon for set-pieces.

“I haven’t changed my mind but I see other players I like to start for us. I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It’s no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah having slightly more mobility.”

John Stones, Maguire’s former partner in competitions, was also mentioned by Tuchel.

“Also John Stones, but he had injuries, so I needed to meet him in person to see how he fits within the group. It will be interesting to see how he behaves in the group. He will stay with us.

“Like I said, he has assets that can be very important in a tournament, especially in knockout football, for defending leads and pursuing games with crosses and set-pieces.”

Maguire is one of the most experienced defenders Tuchel has, and it would be disappointing for him not to have the opportunity to demonstrate his capability as a leader on the international stage.

In the 2025/26 season, the former Leicester City player has shown to be a valuable member of the United squad when fit, starting every match possible during the Carrick era.
