A busy Saturday in the National Women’s Soccer League featured six matches, highlighting memorable moments for new teams and impressive goals from 18-year-olds, while the standings shifted significantly.

Denver breaks NWSL attendance record

Denver Summit FC played its first home game at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium, ending in a 0-0 draw against the Washington Spirit. While no goals were scored, the game marked a league milestone.

The match attracted a record crowd of 63,004, breaking the previous record of 40,091 set by Bay FC in August 2025 against the Spirit in San Francisco. The Spirit won that match 3-2.

In this game, Denver’s defense held strong, and Washington’s best chance came late in stoppage time with Hal Hershfelt’s shot missing the target. Frustration was evident for the midfielder.

The Spirit, now 0-1-3, are still searching for their first win of the season, currently sitting at 12th place. Denver holds 7th place with a record of 1-1-2.

Utah secured a penalty just four minutes into the second half, with Lara Prašnikar converting to extend the Royals’ lead, putting them in a strong position for the rest of the game.

Alex Pfeiffer shines for Bay FC

Bay FC achieved a convincing 3-1 win over the North Carolina Courage, marking their first away victory since April 2025, with star performances by Alex Pfeiffer.

The 18-year-old forward scored Bay FC’s opening goal and was instrumental in extending their lead before halftime. She assisted Cristiana Girelli for a goal and later set up Dorian Bailey for another.

North Carolina’s Manaka Matsukubo scored in the 66th minute, but the team couldn’t recover from Bay FC’s lead.

Both teams had similar possession, but Bay FC had seven shots on target compared to North Carolina’s two.

Kansas City loses third straight

The Kansas City Current faced their third consecutive defeat, unable to score against the Portland Thorns, which featured Sophia Wilson’s first start of the season.

This matchup showcased two new coaches, Robert Vilahamn for Portland and Chris Armas for Kansas City. Vilahamn has led Portland to three wins, while Armas’ Current struggles to replicate last season’s success.

Although Kansas City generated some offense in the first half, Wilson drew a penalty early in the second half, which Olivia Moultrie converted easily. Moultrie became the youngest player to reach 20 regular-season goals, breaking Sam Kerr’s record.

Portland sealed their victory in the 63rd minute with a header from Reilyn Turner, following a long assist from Jayden Perry.

Kansas City is currently positioned fourth from the bottom in the standings.

Melanie Barcenas scores 4,000th goal in NWSL history

The San Diego Wave, who recently signed Catarina Macario to one of the largest contracts in history, enjoyed a 2-0 win against the Chicago Stars.

While San Diego was held scoreless in the first half, they broke through in the 56th minute when Dudinha assisted Lia Godfrey for a goal.

The Wave scored their second in the 73rd minute as 18-year-old Melanie Barcenas skillfully navigated through defenders before striking, marking the 4,000th goal in league history.

Given Kansas City’s recent losses, Chicago’s earlier win against them on March 22 now seems less surprising.

Maddie Mercado scores in back-to-back games for Seattle

Maddie Mercado scored for the second consecutive match as the Seattle Reign secured a 2-1 victory over Racing Louisville.

M delen, Mercado scored 10 minutes in from a set piece, sneaking the ball past Louisville goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer. Minutes before halftime, Nerilia Mondesir added Seattle’s second goal.

Louisville, missing player Emma Sears due to injury, only managed their first shot on target in the 52nd minute. Macey Blackburn scored with a header in the 94th minute.
