Joao Felix has clarified why Portugal maintains its style even when Cristiano Ronaldo is not on the field. Ronaldo is currently absent from the team’s pre-World Cup friendlies due to a slight hamstring issue.

Portugal is gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup without Ronaldo, having excluded him from matches against Mexico and the United States. This absence has prompted questions about how the team operates without its captain. However, Felix emphasized that the team’s tactical approach remains unchanged.

Joao Felix says Portugal do not change without Cristiano Ronaldo

In comments reported by O Jogo, Felix shared that Portugal’s game strategy is consistent whether Ronaldo is in the lineup or not.

“We prepare for the games the same way. With him or without him, we play the same way. We don’t do anything differently,” he stated.

“If another number 9 plays who isn’t Cristiano, the manager will ask him to do the same thing,” added Felix.

This indicates a strong collective identity within the team. While Portugal has outstanding individual players, the system does not change for any one person.

The team also showcases depth in attack. Coach Martinez has multiple options for the central role, despite none matching Ronaldo’s style. Thus, although the player may change, the instructions remain constant.

Cristiano Ronaldo still gives Portugal a different edge

Felix also highlighted an important point. While the plan doesn’t change, Ronaldo significantly boosts the team’s threat when he is available.

“The number 9 will try to do what he has to do, but with Cristiano, the chances of scoring are always higher,” Felix mentioned.

This is the crucial difference. The role is the same, but the output varies since Ronaldo is known for his exceptional finishing ability.

The reason for Ronaldo’s absence is related to fitness, not tactical choices, as he is managing a minor hamstring issue leading up to the World Cup. Thus, the discussion centers on readiness rather than replacement.

Felix’s remarks encapsulated this balance well. Portugal is capable of functioning without Ronaldo, but they remain more potent when he is on the field.
