Defense Improved, But Not Enough

The center-back trio of Alex Freeman, Chris Richards, and Auston Trusty performed well against Portugal in some aspects but struggled in others. They were effective in disrupting Portugal’s attack, cutting off passes and limiting spaces. However, their positioning during stationary moments, such as set plays, was lacking.

Portugal’s first goal came when the trio failed to notice Trincao at the edge of the box. The second goal resulted from leaving Joao Felix unmarked in the same area. Both goals were avoidable and highlighted a recurring issue.

If this trio is the strongest defensive lineup for the USMNT, they need to improve their man-marking skills before the World Cup. Their group-stage opponents, Australia, Paraguay, and Türkiye, are known for utilizing set pieces to disrupt momentum.

Christian Pulisic Isn’t Being Honest

Christian Pulisic appeared tense when he addressed the media at the start of camp. As questions about World Cup pressure piled up, he smiled but seemed irritated. “You want me to feel the pressure, that’s for sure,” he joked, suggesting he was accustomed to the situation.

However, during his 45 minutes on the field against Portugal, Pulisic seemed disengaged. The AC Milan forward hasn’t scored for the USMNT since 2024, and his lack of fitness was apparent from the start. He received a yellow card for a foul in the penalty box and hindered an offensive move by being offside.

In a rough performance, Pulisic only won one of seven duels, making him one of the least effective players on the field. Coach Pochettino substituted him at halftime for NCAA prospect Patrick Agyemang, a move that carried a significant message.

The USMNT will reveal its World Cup roster on Tuesday, May 26, and will face Senegal in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday, May 31.
