Manchester United players caught attention as England continued preparations for the 2026 World Cup. With spots still open, every player aimed to prove their worth for selection.

United has three players in the mix.

In a recent match, England lost 1-0 to Japan, with Kobbie Mainoo starting and Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire coming on in the second half.

Mainoo’s performance received the most criticism, earning low ratings after a challenging night. The Guardian rated him 4/10, commenting on his poor defensive instincts and raising doubts about England’s World Cup prospects. The Mirror offered a more moderate 6/10, acknowledging his neat passing but noting he failed to break down Japan’s defense. The Sun was harsh, giving him a 3/10, criticizing his inability to match Japan’s pace and saying he might have been responsible for another goal without Ezri Konsa’s intervention.

Despite being England’s most combative midfielder and winning many duels, Mainoo did not showcase his best performance in critical moments.

Rashford’s brief appearance received better reviews, with The Mirror rating him 7/10 and both The Guardian and The Sun giving him 6/10. His future is uncertain after Barcelona missed the chance to sign him permanently.

Maguire also received consistent ratings, scoring 6/10 across the board.

With seven league games left for Manchester United, attention will shift back to club football.
