Tottenham Hotspur, having struggled through 2026 without a win, has appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager.
This decision comes just two days after Igor Tudor was dismissed, a month into his role, which was initially set until the end of the season.
Tudor was brought in to stabilize the club following Thomas Frank’s departure, but things did not go as planned.
Currently in 17th place, Tottenham is at risk of relegation, making the decision to hire free agent Roberto De Zerbi an opportunity they could not ignore.
Instead of a short-term contract, De Zerbi has signed a five-year deal that will keep him with the club until 2031.
Additionally, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, reported by SportsWitness, there is a clause in his contract that grants him more authority within the club.
In recent seasons, many teams have shifted to hiring head coaches rather than traditional managers, even though they are still often referred to as managers.
The primary difference lies in their roles: head coaches focus on game preparation and tactics, while managers typically have broader responsibilities.
Traditionally, managers influenced squad building and long-term strategy, but this role has increasingly shifted to technical and sporting directors.
However, at Spurs, reports indicate that De Zerbi will have powers similar to the classic manager role.
His authority at Tottenham is compared to that of Sir Alex Ferguson, a legendary figure in Premier League history.
Initially, De Zerbi turned down their offer, but the expanded powers and his say in club matters ultimately convinced him to accept the position.
