It was later revealed that Neymar meant “acordou de Chico,” which translates to “woke up on the wrong side of the bed” or “had a bad day.” However, this phrase can also be informally linked to a woman’s menstrual cycle, giving it a more contentious interpretation.
According to CNN Brazil, the word “chico” can also mean “pig” or “dirty,” terms that historically described menstruation in women due to negative associations, adding to the controversy.
Neymar is facing criticism from various women’s groups, who feel his remarks demonstrate disrespect towards women.
