The Fairgrounds Speedway has faced political gridlock for almost 15 years, despite talks about upgrades. A Vanderbilt University Poll reveals that 36% of local residents want the track demolished, while only 26% support the return of NASCAR racing.

Another survey by Power Poll, which gathers opinions from civic leaders and influencers, shows the situation is even worse. This poll indicates that 55% favor tearing down the track, while only 29% back the NASCAR proposal.

What Is The NASCAR Plan For The Fairgrounds?

Speedway Motorsports, which owns various tracks in the U.S. including Nashville Super Speedway, has suggested a plan to lease and manage the Fairgrounds Speedway.

This plan involves a proposed investment of around $116 million to renovate the Speedway and revive NASCAR in the area.

Initially presented in 2021, the plan faced several delays. If approved, it would have introduced a 10-race calendar and potentially a Cup race, also increasing the track’s capacity from 14,000 to about 30,000.

In contrast, there are ongoing urban redevelopment projects, such as Cumberland Yard, put forth by Fairgrounds Preservation Partners, which aim to replace the oval with 600 residential units and an electric racing ‘Fast Track.’

Another proposal involves using part of the oval for affordable housing and the remainder for parking linked to a nearby soccer stadium. Unfortunately, these redevelopment plans seem more promising, reducing the likelihood of NASCAR’s return.
