Barcelona escaped a significant decision during their match against Atlético Madrid.
Details: The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) has declared the actions of referee Busquets Ferreira improper during the La Liga match on matchday 30. This comes after the controversial incident involving Barcelona’s Gerard Martin.
Martin was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Atlético’s Thiago Almada. However, after VAR official Melero Lopez advised Busquets to review the video, the red card was rescinded, and Martin was only given a yellow card, allowing him to stay on the field.
The CTA emphasized that Melero Lopez overstepped his authority by contacting the main referee about Martin’s dismissal since the referee’s decision is final and not subject to re-evaluation according to the rules.
The Committee also clarified that the main issue was not Busquets Ferreira’s decision to overturn the red card but rather the VAR official’s interference. Consequently, Melero Lopez will face the most severe suspension.
On the other hand, referee Busquets Ferreira will receive a lighter penalty.
Reminder: The Atlético vs Barcelona match sparked controversy as the referee initially sent off Gerard Martin, only to later overturn that decision.
