One selection criterion has led to the exclusion of the Moroccan international.

The nominees for the Best African Player award in France’s Ligue 1 were announced on April 9. However, Achraf Hakimi, last year’s winner, is not among the 11 finalists. This absence does not reflect his on-field performance.

Rather, it stems from the legal issues surrounding Achraf Hakimi. According to L’Equipe, the Moroccan has been left off the finalist list due to facing trial for rape. One of the criteria for selection requires players to “exhibit exemplary behavior both on and off the pitch,” clarifying why Hakimi is not included among the nominees.
