Manchester United legend Roy Keane believes that a win over Liverpool could significantly strengthen Michael Carrick’s case for the permanent manager’s job at Old Trafford.
Carrick is currently in charge on an interim basis, and United are preparing for a high-profile Premier League clash that could have wider implications beyond the result itself.
Keane says victories in big games against top opposition carry extra weight when assessing a manager’s long-term credentials.
“Michael Carrick… If he can get a win today, I think that could have a big say in terms of whether he gets the Manchester United job.
“If he can beat Liverpool, like when he started the job here, beating Man City and Arsenal, it does carry a bit more weight than beating the other teams in the Premier League,” Keane has said.
