Benfica and Argentina national team defender Nicolás Otamendi is anticipated to switch clubs this summer. As reported by ESPN, the experienced centre-back is nearing a return to his homeland, with River Plate emerging as a likely destination.

River Plate is reportedly aiming to finalize the deal after the World Cup, during which Otamendi is expected to be included in Lionel Scaloni’s squad for the tournament.

The 38-year-old’s current contract with the Lisbon club is set to expire on June 30, 2026. Once this contract ends, Otamendi will have the opportunity to depart from Benfica as a free agent. Since joining the Portuguese giants in 2020, he has made 280 appearances, netted 18 goals, and provided 14 assists.
