Spain’s hopes for a strong start in the World Cup have taken a hit as midfielder Lamine Yamal is expected to miss the opening matches due to injury. The highly regarded 18-year-old player from Barcelona will likely not recover in time from a hamstring injury.

According to reports from The Athletic, Yamal is almost certain to miss Spain’s first match against Cape Verde on June 15. The coaching staff has also indicated that he may be unavailable for the second group stage match against Saudi Arabia, scheduled for June 21.

This season, Yamal has made a significant impact for Barcelona, participating in 45 matches, during which he scored 24 goals and provided 18 assists.
