Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure as head coach of Uruguay will conclude with the upcoming World Cup, as the renowned Argentine coach has confirmed that he will not be renewing his contract.

According to Germán García Grova, the 70-year-old Bielsa stated that he will step down after the tournament, regardless of the results. He has expressed no intention of extending his deal, leaving open the possibility of either returning to club football or retiring from the sport entirely.

“Our work will end with the World Cup. I thank Uruguay for allowing me to enjoy the World Cup,” Bielsa stated.

Bielsa took over as Uruguay’s head coach in 2023. Under his guidance, the national team has played 33 matches, achieving 16 victories, 10 draws, and 7 losses.

In the World Cup, Uruguay has been placed in Group H, where they will compete against Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde.
