Tragic news from Greece has emerged following a fatal car accident involving former footballer Marios Ikonomou.

The 33-year-old former defender, who represented the Greek national team, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital after a motorcycle accident last week. Despite the efforts of medical professionals to save him, Ikonomou passed away, leaving behind a legacy in the sport.

Throughout his career, Ikonomou played for several clubs, including PAS Giannina, Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, Bari, AEK, Copenhagen, Sampdoria, and his final team, Panetolikos. He also earned six caps representing Greece.

Ikonomou announced his retirement from professional football in the summer of 2024, marking the end of a notable career in the sport.
