Bafana Bafana’s journey to the World Cup has been marred by delays, raising concerns about the team’s preparedness for the global stage. The South African national team arrived in Mexico last Tuesday, a day later than scheduled, due to visa issues that have plagued the squad.
Assistant coach Helman Mkhalele faced similar challenges, arriving on Thursday, indicating ongoing problems with the team’s travel arrangements. Former national team goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who has 91 caps for Bafana, expressed concerns over the impact of these setbacks on the players’ mental readiness.
Khune noted that such incidents can play a significant role in shaping players’ focus leading up to crucial matches. “If you hear that the visas are not ready, it definitely plays in your mind,” he remarked during the launch of the Carling Black Label FIFA World Cup ‘We Are The Champions’ campaign.
As Bafana Bafana prepares to face Mexico this Thursday in their opening match, Khune emphasized the need for senior players to support the team in maintaining their focus, urging the South African Football Association (SAFA) to address logistical issues well in advance to avoid further disruptions.
