Because the referee did not consider Hakimi’s tackle serious foul play and VAR apparently did not identify a clear red-card offence, the decision stood.

While the Real Madrid attacker was visibly frustrated and fans continued to debate the challenge online, officials saw insufficient grounds to overturn the call.
