The 2026 World Cup match between Brazil and Morocco ended in a 1-1 draw, but the game was particularly significant for Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi. He achieved a milestone by playing his 11th World Cup match, thereby equaling the record for the most appearances by an African footballer in the tournament’s history.

According to Stats Foot, Hakimi now shares this top position with two prominent figures in African football history: former Cameroon defender François Omam-Biyik and ex-Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan, who also have 11 World Cup appearances each.

Hakimi has the opportunity to break this record outright on June 20, when Morocco will face Scotland in their second group stage match.
