This Saturday marks the start of the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, and Saudi Arabia will be one of the 16 participating teams.

The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup kicks off this Saturday with a matchup between reigning champions Mexico and the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium in California. On Sunday, Saudi Arabia will make its debut—an unusual presence in this kind of tournament, as the team normally competes in Asia.

The Gold Cup is the most prestigious national team tournament organized by Concacaf, the soccer confederation that includes countries from North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and even some from South America. Saudi Arabia’s participation, then, is clearly not due to geography, but rather to an invitation extended by Concacaf.

The decision had been rumored for months before it was officially announced late last year, shortly after Saudi Arabia was confirmed as the host of the FIFA World Cup 2034. The move is intended to strengthen ties between the two confederations, while also offering both competitive and commercial advantages

On the sporting side, it gives Saudi Arabia the opportunity to compete in a high-level tournament—an opportunity that will be repeated in the 2027 edition—and helps the team prepare for upcoming challenges. Commercially, it’s also a win for Concacaf, generating interest in regions of the world that would otherwise give little or no attention to the Gold Cup.

What other teams from around the world have played in the Gold Cup?

Saudi Arabia’s invitation to play in the 2025 Gold Cup adds to a long list of similar cases over the past few decades. The first time this happened was in 1996, when Brazil took part with a U-23 squad that reached the final but lost to Mexico. That happened again in 1998 and 2003.

Colombia also competed in the Gold Cup three times—in 2000, 2003, and 2005—while Peru (2000) and Ecuador (2002) are the other South American teams that have participated. In 2005, South Africa became the first (and so far only) African team to play in the tournament.

Saudi Arabia will have its first opportunity to compete in the Gold Cup this summer, and they will do it again in two years. But they’re not the first Asian side to take part in the tournament: South Korea (2000 and 2002) and Qatar (2021 and 2023) also competed. In these cases, a clear pattern emerges: these teams joined in the years leading up to hosting the World Cup, as a way to build competitive rhythm.

The challenges facing Saudi Arabia in the 2025 Gold Cup

Saudi Arabia is in Group D of the 2025 Gold Cup. They will make their tournament debut this Sunday against Haiti at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. On Thursday, June 19, they’ll face their toughest test of the group stage against the United States at Q2 Stadium in Austin. Finally, the Asian side will wrap up their group play on Sunday, June 22, against Trinidad and Tobago at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada.
