Ronwen Williams envisions a promising future for South African football following the team’s 1-0 victory against South Korea earlier today. This win marks a historic achievement for the Bafana, as they qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in the team’s history, thanks to a goal from Thapelo Maseko during their final match in Group A at Estadio Monterrey.
In a post-match interview with SABC Sport, Williams expressed his overwhelming pride in the team’s performance. “It was amazing. I am lost for words. I don’t know if there is a better word for proud. I am super proud, I am ecstatic. This is what this has been through, the doubt, the doubters. The stress that we’ve gone through to play at this elite level is not easy.” He highlighted the team’s defensive strength, stating, “To keep a clean sheet against such quality opposition, to perform and defend the way we did speaks volumes of the character of this team.”
Williams noted the resilience of his team, despite facing intense pressure. “We were under siege, but we stayed strong. The mentality and character in these boys…I mean, I am scared for the future. These boys are 20, 19, 21, playing at this level. I’m an old head already, so the experience that they are gaining will only help us as a country. I am just happy and proud to be a leader of this team.”
Looking ahead, Hugo Broos’ squad will face co-hosts Canada in the round of 32 of the tournament.
