Norway’s head coach, Ståle Solbakken, has clarified his decision to rest first-team players during a recent match against France, which ended in a 4-1 loss. Despite the defeat, Norway had already secured a playoff berth prior to the match, prompting the coaching staff to prioritize player recovery over fielding their strongest lineup.
Following the previous match against Senegal, an analysis revealed that five or six players were showing signs of serious fatigue, particularly in the back line and among some midfielders, by the 80th minute. Solbakken noted that the team had a short recovery period before facing France, which influenced their approach for the final group stage match.
“We could have put up a good fight, but our goal is to win,” Solbakken stated, explaining the importance of assessing the team’s physical condition against their chances for a strong performance. He emphasized that the decision to rest key players was widely supported by physiotherapists, medical staff, and even some players who acknowledged the challenges of competing in their fatigued state.
“We could have put up a good fight, but our goal is to win,” said the Norwegian boss. According to him, it was crucial to evaluate how realistic the team’s chances were given the players’ physical condition.
The coach’s rationale was well-considered, taking into account both the team’s immediate needs and their readiness for upcoming matches.
