Hugo Broos expressed disappointment following South Africa’s 1-0 defeat to Canada in the World Cup last-32 match held last night in Los Angeles. The head coach acknowledged that his team struggled to perform at their best against a formidable Canadian side, managed by Jesse Marsch.

In a post-match interview with SABC3, Broos noted the timing of Canada’s decisive goal, which came just minutes before the end of the game. “You received a goal in the moment when the game is finished, it was two or three minutes to play,” he remarked. “It’s done in that moment and for Canada it was the right moment also to score.”

Broos highlighted the physicality of the Canadian team, stating, “To be honest, today there was more speed and power in our opponent, and we lost many duels, certainly man against man duels because of the power.” He emphasized the need for improvement in these areas, indicating that South African football must adapt to include greater speed and strength, moving away from the traditional tiki-taka style.

“I think we have an example today with our opponent,” Broos concluded, pointing to Canada’s performance as a model for future development in South African football.
