Sweden has called up Alexander Isak for its upcoming World Cup qualifiers, even though he hasn’t played for Newcastle United this season as he looks for a transfer.
The striker is part of a 24-man squad announced by Sweden’s coach Jon Dahl Tomasson for matches against Slovenia and Kosovo.
“I’m very pleased that Alexander Isak wants to join us; he’s a key player,” Tomasson stated. “The situation isn’t ideal, and he hasn’t trained with the team.”
“However, he has the ability to change games and is eager to be part of our team. The World Cup is significant for him.”
Isak, regarded as one of the world’s top strikers, expressed his dissatisfaction with Newcastle on social media last week, claiming the club has not honored promises regarding his potential departure, particularly amid interest from Liverpool.
He has not participated in Newcastle’s first two Premier League matches this season—against Aston Villa and Liverpool—and is training away from the main squad.
Sweden noted that Isak is expected to join the national team in Stockholm on Monday, coinciding with the closing of the transfer window.
