A 59-year-old man was arrested for sending abusive messages on social media to England defender Jess Carter during last month’s women’s European Championship, according to Cheshire Police.
During Euro 2025, Carter revealed she faced online racist abuse while in Switzerland and decided to take a break from social media for the duration of the tournament, which England ultimately won against Spain in a penalty shootout.
The 27-year-old, who is Black, faced criticism after England’s quarterfinal win over Sweden, where they conceded two goals in the first half.
Cheshire Police stated, “Following the reports, an investigation was initiated by the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) in collaboration with social media companies to identify those responsible.”
On Thursday, August 28, Lancashire Police arrested the 59-year-old man from Great Harwood on suspicion of Malicious Communications regarding some of the messages.
He has been released under investigation as inquiries continue.
Carter received overwhelming support from her teammates, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, UEFA, her club Gotham FC, and the National Women’s Soccer League.
