A close friend of Mohamed Salah, former Egyptian international Ahmed Elmohamady, has stepped up to defend the Liverpool star against harsh criticism from Jamie Carragher. Salah had expressed his frustration at being left on the bench for three consecutive matches. In response, Carragher suggested that the attacker was more concerned about his personal situation than the team’s performance. Elmohamady fiercely replied on X, branding Carragher a “shame” and highlighting his friend’s achievements: “Mo Salah has completely rewritten his story through hard work, humility, and world-class performances. He has carried Egypt on his shoulders for years and deserves everything”. He also referenced Carragher’s past criticisms: “No wonder Ronaldo completely ignored you. No wonder Mourinho said you were below average”.
Amid the overwhelming support for Salah, Carragher eventually issued an apology during an appearance on CBS Sports, admitting: “Mo, I’m sorry for upsetting you. I love you as a Liverpool player, but you need to keep your composure off the field”. This late apology contrasts with his earlier analysis, where he accused Salah of wanting to “secure his own position” at the club’s expense. According to The Times, Mohamed Salah was reinstated for the match against Brighton after a one-on-one talk with his manager.
