Manchester City has climbed to second place in the Premier League standings following a convincing 3-0 win against Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium. With this victory, City now has 31 points, narrowing the gap to just two points behind league leaders Arsenal, who faced a defeat against Aston Villa earlier today.
Goals from Rúben Dias in the 31st minute, JoÅ¡ko Gvardiol in the 35th, and Phil Foden in the 65th minute secured a dominant victory for Pep Guardiola’s side. Sunderland struggled to handle City’s offensive pressure, failing to register a single shot on target during the first half.
The opening goal came from a precise pass by Ryan Sherki, setting up Dias. From outside the penalty area, Dias fired a powerful shot into the top corner of the net, marking his second goal of the season. Just four minutes later, Gvardiol doubled the lead by heading in a corner kick delivered by Phil Foden. This was also Gvardiol’s second goal of the season.
In the second half, Phil Foden made it 3-0, scoring his sixth goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Sherki, who recorded his fourth assist of the campaign.
Sunderland attempted to mount a comeback in the closing stages with a series of corners and free kicks, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Their troubles were compounded in injury time when substitute Luke O’Nien was shown a red card, forcing them to finish the match with ten players.
